A Colorado Planner’s Take

Let’s talk about one of the biggest timeline decisions you’ll make for your wedding day: to first look or not to first look? If you’re planning a wedding in Colorado (or anywhere, really), this is a hot topic — and one that comes up in almost every timeline meeting I have with my couples. As a planner, I have thoughts (spoiler: I love a first look), but more than anything, I want what feels right for you. So let’s break it down.

What Is a First Look?

A first look is a private (or semi-private) moment where the couple sees each other before the ceremony. It’s intentional, emotional, and often ends up being one of the most memorable parts of the day. But hey, if you’ve always dreamed of that big aisle reveal? That’s Special too!

Why Some Couples Say No

A lot of couple are hesitant about a first look because they feel like it will take away from the moment — the one where the doors open, the music swells, and there they are, walking down the aisle. It’s iconic. It’s what we see in the movies, what we have seen as guests, it’s what we know best! Totally fair.

But here’s the thing: most people only know what they’ve seen. Of course the aisle moment feels like the thing to look forward to — it’s all they’ve been shown! What I love doing is gently inviting my couples to look at all their options. Times are changing, and weddings can look however you want them to.

Why I Love a First Look (and Why You Might Too)

From a logistical standpoint? A dream. From an emotional standpoint? Even better. Here’s what I see again and again:

Grooms pacing around their suites while we finish setup, too nervous to eat, sip water, or sit still. I ask what they need: water? A shot? Pizza? Usually they say, "I'm good, I'm fine."

Then we do the first look.

And afterward? That same groom is chill. He’s smiling, grounded, relaxed. He saw his person, and now he's just excited to get married.

You Don’t Lose the Aisle Moment

This is the biggest misconception: that a first look somehow "takes away" from the aisle moment. I’m here to tell you — it doesn’t. The aisle moment is magic no matter what. There is no recreating the power of seeing your partner walk toward you to say "I do" — not even a first look can change that.

So why not have both?

A first look gives you a private moment to connect before the whirlwind begins, and you can still keep some surprises for the ceremony. A lot of brides choose to save their veil or bouquet for the walk down the aisle, adding an extra touch of magic to that moment.

Perks of a First Look

  • More time together on your wedding day

  • Pre-ceremony nerves? Eased. You get to ground each other.

  • Photos done early — newlywed portraits, wedding party, and even family.

  • Post-ceremony break time to breathe, eat, drink, and say "What just happened?!"

  • Actually enjoy cocktail hour! You planned it, you paid for it, you should be at it!

  • More time with your people before the ceremony for a toast, a shot, or a pep talk.

Either option can work beautifully with thoughtful planning and a relaxed vibe.
