A SIMPLE GUIDE FOR FRIENDS AND FAMILY
First, congratulations! Being asked to officiate a wedding is an incredible honor. Many of the ceremonies we plan are led by loved ones, and they are often the most meaningful because of that personal connection.
Our goal is to help you feel confident, prepared, and supported. Below is a simple overview of what to expect, a basic ceremony outline, and a few helpful tips to ensure everything flows smoothly.
Ceremony Outline
Every ceremony is unique, but this structure offers a strong and easy foundation:
Processional
You will begin by walking to the altar while background music is playing.
Once you reach the front, take a moment to welcome guests and share any announcements. This is a good time to ask guests to silence and put away their phones
After your announcements, the DJ will begin the formal processional music for family and the wedding party.
Ceremony
Introduction: Share a few words about the couple and the meaning of marriage.
Readings or Quotes: This is optional, but a good place for customization.
Vows: Introduce this moment and guide the couple.
Exchange of Rings
Declaration of Marriage: Officially pronounce them married!
The Kiss: Step slightly to the side so this moment is clear for photos.
Closing Remarks: Invite guests to cocktail hour or the next portion of the celebration.
Most ceremonies last about 15 to 20 minutes. Keeping things thoughtful and concise helps maintain a comfortable and engaging experience for guests. Personalization is always encouraged. Sharing meaningful stories, humor, and heartfelt words is what makes the ceremony feel truly special.
Helpful Tips for Officiants
Microphone Use
The DJ will typically provide a microphone. Hold it just below your chin and speak clearly into it. If the couple is reading personal vows, hold the microphone for them unless they prefer otherwise.
Arrival Time
Plan to arrive one hour before the ceremony so we can review logistics, complete a sound check, and connect before guests arrive.
Check-In
Please check in with the planner upon arrival so we can walk through timing, cues, and positioning together.
Rehearsal
We highly recommend attending the rehearsal. This is where we walk through entrances, transitions, and key moments so everyone feels comfortable and confident. We will guide you through the structure while still keeping the ceremony itself feeling fresh and meaningful.
Important Cues
Ask guests to silence and put away their phones before the ceremony begins
Ask guests to stand as the couple enters
Invite guests to be seated once the couple is at the front
Step aside after the pronouncement so the first kiss is unobstructed
Invite guests to the next portion of the celebration after the recessional
Attire
Dress in a way that feels polished and appropriate for the setting. For outdoor ceremonies, consider sun, wind, and uneven ground. Avoid sunglasses during the ceremony if possible, as they can feel distracting in photos. It is also helpful to check with the couple to see if they have any preferences for attire.
Marriage License Notes (Colorado)
In Colorado, couples can self-solemnize, which means they do not legally need an officiant or witnesses to be married.
If you are officiating as a friend or family member, you can lead the ceremony without needing to manage the legal portion.
Many couples choose to sign the marriage license themselves and have their officiant sign as a witness. If the couple would like you to sign as the officiant, some choose to complete a simple online ordination for added clarity.
We recommend reviewing the instructions provided by the county where the license is issued so everyone feels confident in the process.
